I’m working on a project where ColdFusion would encrypt the files with AES; clients would download the files and decrypt on their workstations. EncryptBinary() wouldn’t work well because some of these files are rather large. Plus, I need native Windows client that can encrypt/decrypt the files too.

I found this open source product called AES Crypt, and it works on multiple platforms, including Java, Windows, and Macs! Here are the steps to get it working with ColdFusion:

Download AES Crypt source code and binary (Java)

Install it under ColdFusion class path – usually C:\ColdFusion8\wwwroot\WEB-INF\classes\

Here is the sample code to try out:

<cfscript>
ftc=createObject("java", "es.vocali.util.AESCrypt").init("Password");
ftc.encrypt(2, "C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/test/aescrypt/file/DivXInstaller.zip", "C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/test/aescrypt/file/DivXInstaller.zip.aes");
</cfscript>

I ran my ColdFusion test page and got this error. “Please make sure “Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files” (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) is installed on your JRE.”

It turns out that I need to download “Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files 6” from Sun.

JCE zip file has two jars: “local_policy.jar” and “US_export_policy.jar” Move them to ColdFusion JRE security folder, usually C:\ColdFusion8\runtime\jre\lib\security\. If you don’t where ColdFusion JRE is at, open C:\ColdFusion8\runtime\bin\jvm.config and look for java.home= C:/ColdFusion8/runtime/jre.

Restart your ColdFusion and viola … it works!!

Last note, I was stupid enough to put those jars in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\lib\security.

I had ColdFusion 9 installed three times, so I was pretty confident going in. I popped the CD in and start installation on Windows 2008 Server (64 bits) running ColdFusion 8 (32 bits). Installation completed successfully without a glitch, and ColdFusion launched post installation scripts. That’s where the problem starts … I get HTTP 500 Server Error. I knew right away that it must be IIS related, so I run ColdFusion Web Server Config Tool. Nothing else to change there, so I’m back to IIS Manager. I remember turning 32 bit mode on in IIS Application Pool, so once I turn it off, ColdFusion runs!

My happiness however was short live. ColdFusion didn’t install as Upgrade. Rather, it did a fresh install, and now I’ve ColdFusion 8 and 9 running simultaneously – meaning none of the old setup was copied (no data sources, no mail servers, nothing). I was cursing at Adobe … how could they be so stupid? Why didn’t they ask me if I want to do Upgrade or Install? With very little time to spare, I manually start setting up ODBC data sources, and there I hit my final road block with MS Access. I keep getting “Unable to update the NT registry.” A quick Google tells me that there may not be 64 bits driver for Access. True or not, I don’t know.

I need to bring the server back soon, and now, I’m glad that Adobe didn’t do the upgrade. All I had to do with stop all ColdFusion 9 services, turn ColdFusion 8 services back on, re-run ColdFusion Web Sever Config, and I’m done. My New Year spirit is saved!!

I’m running XP Pro under VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro. The speed is quite impressive. In fact, Quicken runs faster under VMWare than on my 4 years old Toshiba notebook. However, since I installed McAfee, memory usage has gone up double, and speed is unbearable sometimes. McAfee is running a shit load of things, and I don’t need them. So, I turn off all services, but I can’t stop McShield service. I google for about 20 minutes and still no solution. To my surprise, the services I stopped now all restarted. I’m pissed. It’s my computer, and I should be able to do whatever I want. The only way I was able to stop was through Process Explorer program from SysInternals. Kill all McAffee processes, run to Services and disable them before they take control again.

As much as I’m terrified of viruses, anti-virus programs are not much better either. They use scare tactics. They harass you. They come without your permission, and they don’t go even when you want them to go away. Which is more evil? Virus or Anti-Virus. Both are.

Growing up in a very traditional family, Alcohol was a definite NO … NO even in my college and post college years. I started drinking about 4 years ago, and I’m fascinated by its powers – both good and evil. There are enough stories on how alcohol destroys lives, so I’m trying to compile its benefits.

Heart disease

When consumed in moderation, alcohol lowers the risk of heart attacks by 30-40%. I was told that a glass of red wine a day would lower my cholesterol, but apparently, it’s not just wine – all alcohol

There’s clear evidence that alcohol reduces heart-disease risk if consumed in moderation. It’s substantial, a 30 to 40 percent reduction … Contrary to what the French say, it is the alcohol” that confers the benefit, regardless of whether one drinks wine, beer or spirits.”

Dr. Walter Willett

Chair of the Department of Nutrition

Harvard School of Public Health

Here are the reasons:

[Dr. Donald D. Hensrud, Chair, Preventive, Occupational and Aerospace Medicine Departments at Mayo Clinic,] attributes half of the cardiovascular benefit associated with drinking to the fact that alcohol raises levels of HDL, or “good” cholesterol, in the bloodstream. Beyond that, he says, it thins blood and decreases platelet aggregation, which helps reduce clotting. Alcohol may help decrease inflammation, a key player in many diseases (including cancer and heart disease) and reduces risk of ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain is blocked by a clot.

Reduce Stress

I can’t agree more. Alcohol does makes me happy, but too much and it gives me headache and make me feel miserable next day.

Although alcohol is a depressant, some of its benefits may derive from its salubrious effect on our mood. In moderate amounts, Hensrud says, alcohol can help reduce stress, which is increasingly recognized as contributing to ill health.

…

“I’m not trying to sound like a prude,” Hensrud says, “but when people rely on alcohol for relaxation, it can become a crutch. There’s a line some people cross and don’t even know it.”

“Nobody intends on becoming an alcoholic,” he continues. While some people have a genetic predisposition to alcoholism, it’s not a good idea for anybody to drink every day,” he says. “It can become a habit and sneak up to bite you.”

Diabetes & Alzheimer

Alcohol consumption slightly reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes, Willett says. Hensrud notes that moderate drinking is also linked to reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Longevity

“People who consume moderate amounts of alcohol have a lower risk of dying than people who don’t drink at all,” Hensrud says. That reduced risk probably is tied to lower incidence of heart disease among drinkers, he says.

Quicken automatically downloaded R7 patch, and when I tried to run it, I got “A patching engine error has occurred.” I basically ignored the patch and thought I could live without it. But the problem is that every time I sny’c up all my accounts, “Update Quicken” window keeps popping up, and it’s annoying to constantly click on “Cancel” button. I remember the same thing happening with last year version – 2008, and I smells a rat now. Why is this annoying error happening near the end of year? Last year, it was so annoying that I ended up upgrading to new Quicken version. Are they intentionally making this annoying “bug” in the system so that they can sell more new versions?

Today, I finally look up Quicken support, and this article lists possible solutions. #1 is not an issue. My Quicken is already on C drive. #2 is not an issue either though my Temp folder is 500+ MB. #3 manual download and install does the job! One less annoying thing in life. I’m pissy enough that I might not be updating Quicken this year.
